This year my visual art course will focus on Painting.
Over the years I enjoyed taking painting and feel I have improved greatly through the visual art course with the help of my teachers and peers.
Last year my skills in painting improved however I had trouble with getting and using artist models when I was required too. This year I hope to improve at that point.
This year I will be taking my theme away from more of monsters and going towards real life issues that will be more relatable for many people. This will be a big change from my past two years of painting monsters.
The two brainstorms have helped me figure out my possible theme of body image and/or beauty standards.

Frida Kahlo
Kathe Kollwitz
Banksy
These are the three artists I have chosen
I have chosen these three artists because they have a more sorrowful and sad appeal to their art pieces, rather than the bright colors and such used by other artists.
Methods and Techniques
Detailing, this is the use of a small, fine brush to add finish details to an artist's paintings.
Used near the completion of an artists painting, done with precision and control, this is also used in landscaping to create the small details that are particular to the painting, such as flowers. Useful for features that require attention and a careful hand.
Stippling, this is the use of a brush to create a collection of tiny dots. This is often used in landscaping, originating as a method of engraving. Stripling is used to create real dimensions in a painting with colourful.Used for a painter to change the color with variation in the painting, otherwise known as gradient or gradation, this is what makes it useful for landscaping as the sudden changes but also purposeful changes in colors. The methods used for this come in two variants, the sponge variant and the brush variant. The sponge variant is where you lightly tap a damp sponge with paint onto the surface of your painting. The brush variant is where you lightly tap a damp brush onto your surface, both will result in the stippling effect.
Constructs
Post Impressionism
Post impressionism was the french art movement, it is the term used to describe the reaction and change of impressionism.
Post impressionism is pushing past the boundaries and limitations of art set by others, using vivid colours, real life subject matters, and more often than not, an emphasis on geometric form that distorts form to extend the expressive effect.
This movement known as post impressionism was a way to revolt against the naturalistic depictions of life, light and colour, in impressionism.
The Olive Trees by Vincent Van Gogh
Minority Complex
Minority Complex is the use of art to challenge the thoughts and treatment of African-Americans, these art pieces represent the past problems and their treatment of African-Americans, some also show the beauty and humanity of an African-American.
These artworks tend to have an abstract and propaganda like feeling, representing African-Americans with odd and exaggerated expressive figures to catch the eyes of people passing by and to have them really think about what it could mean and represent in the African-American society.
Beach Towel by Kerry James Marshall
Feminism in art
Feminism in art is the use of the stereotypes of a female, exploring the themes that is put upon woman, stereotyping, discrimination, sexual objectification, oppression, and patriarchy. These art pieces are used to define and show the political and social differences women experience daily compared to the rest of society, they were built up with the idea of creating a dialogue between the viewers and the artwork, this was done through the inclusion of a female's perspective on society. Through this they started the feminist art movement beginning during the 1960s and ending around the 1970s.

Board art
These two pieces
Lockdown work
Forms and contours exercise

The first series of work for my board was completed during lockdown.
The four artworks are influenced by Banksy and his work, with the models of me and a barbie doll to represent the real life body and the fake but worshipped fake body.
The second series of work is almost completed, using mainly barbie as the model to represent advertisements of beauty products, mainly showing how nothing really changes for people considered 'beautiful' it is a pure cash grab.
The last piece for the second series of work has been sketched out
Last piece of the series completed
All of this series completed and put on board, this series is based on a more advertisement feel, though I did make a spelling mistake on the first piece of work. Rather than the box saying 'Beauty' it says 'Beaty', this can easily be viewed as beautiful woman not being smart which is why I kept the mistake there. This then holds the stereotype many woman have to suffer through.
Planning for two pieces at the bottom of the board as the original four were not going to be able to fit in the space left at the bottom.
The two might become four depending on sizes cut, if I am able to fit thinner pieces there will be two side pieces with the main larger two, featuring possibly a needle or makeup.
Sketch for this series has been completed, I will be attempting to do an inverted painting with the eyes to play around with some different styles.

Art progress
My kaupapa is to spread awareness of the complicated body image and beauty standard issues woman generally have.
The almost completed piece of inverted pages accompanied by the smaller make up paintings kept slightly messy to show make up also has imperfections, and even as a cover it can not make yourself perfect.
The inverted attempt is to represent a form of inner beauty without having to peel back skin.
My checklist for internal standards
Painting is definitely working however I would like to do my pencil based pieces soon as they are currently lacking.
So far the only thing that isn't working for me is the inverted painting as I think it will be odd to have on my board with much of the natural and plastic style, however it will stay on my board to show some experimentation.
My next step will be to finish my current painting, and begin the next series of work which will be more based around make up and mirror scenarios. Consisting of 3 works of art. I will be attempting to mix pencil and painting together for these pieces.
I need to fix up the blended look and tonnage with detail.
This is going to be beside the other inverted painting between the make up pieces.
Board one was completed Friday, 31st July.
The inverted colour scheme paintings were not as great as I had initially hoped however this doesn't make the board any less well made. I will not be trying inverted again however it was still enjoyable to try with interior meaning to the paintings.
My next step is to begin the next series of paintings for the 2nd board. I will be including sketches within the paintings for this series.
The plan for the next series was created on the 31st of July.
Series and Sequences
Monday, 3rd August, our teacher had us cut up a previous students portfolio, on paper, and to make sense of the series created by the student. We then had to put it together in another way that would also make sense to read like a story.
This portfolio was hard to put into another story as I personally have a hard time with abstract art, I chose to go with a colour-esc approach to the pieces and attempted to make a story with it using shapes and colours used to make it coherent.

The first of the next series is almost completed, all that needs to be added is a touch of paint within the mirror itself.
After this is completed I will work on the other two pieces of the series of work, using the method of heavy pencil for the main area to show a black and white look, while colouring the mirror with bright colourful tones to make it pop and catch the viewers attention.
A fake reality always looks better than the real world to many, hence this choice of colour. I will be integrating this choice into future pieces
The first piece is complete, but the second and third piece are to be completed before the end of the week.
The idea is to have a more colourful mirror while the main piece is sketched, messy and black and white. This is to convey that the reflection and what you want to see looks better than what we actually are.
These pieces were finished Friday, although not my best piece I won't be changing anything until my boards are all filled. That way I make sure to pass and can come back to older pieces to add and change things.
These were cut Friday and the sketches for the large barbie piece was started.
The idea for these pieces is to show off the ideas of plastic surgery and perfection.
Sketch completed September 16th, painting will be started once the other sketches have been completed.
The second piece of this series is completed, I took on a plastic surgery look in hopes of causing the viewer to see that they aim for perfection, which will later be solidified with the Barbie painting.
This is the board layout for my last board
These two pieces are based off advertisements for make up while also taking inspiration from the art of Triptych for these two pieces.
